AS OF MARCH 11, 2020 THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) HAS MADE THE ASSESSMENT THAT COVID-19 CAN BE CHARACTERIZED AS PANDEMIC. JUST AS THE GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP, THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH IN SURINAME IS COLLABORATING WITH ALL GOVERNMENT AUTHORITIES ON A NATIONAL LEVEL, TO LIMIT THE SPREAD OF COVID-19 IN SURINAME BY IMPLEMENTING SEVERAL MEASUREMENTS INCLUDING A NATIONAL PARTIAL LOCKDOWN FROM 20.00 PM- 06.00 AM. ALL THE BORDERS OF SURINAME ARE CLOSED FOR INTERNATIONAL VISITORS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS DRASTICALLY AFFECTED THE TOURISM INDUSTRY WORLDWIDE. DUE TO THIS PANDEMIC SOME COMPANIES IN SURINAME ARE FORCED TO CLOSE THEIR DOORS WHILE SOME ARE OPERATING PARTIALLY. THE TOURISM SECTOR IN SURINAME IS EXPERIENCING A MAJOR ECONOMIC DECLINE AS A RESULT OF THIS PANDEMIC. IN ADDITION TO THE ECONOMIC CRISIS SURINAME HAS CANCELLED MAJOR EVENTS AND INCREASED IT’S TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS INTERNATIONALLY AND DOMESTICALLY.
SURINAME CONTINUES TO MONITOR THE SITUATION OF THE CORONAVIRUS LOCALLY, REGIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY. WE LOOK FORWARD TO WELCOME VISITORS TO SURINAME AGAIN WHEN IT’S SAFE TO DO SO.
